Evellum Production

Our group specializes in digital facsimiles and electronic editions of ancient and medieval texts. All of the products on this website were produced by Evellum.

We invite inquiries from those engaged in the preparation of electronic facsimiles and editions who want information about how our templates can be adapted for their projects or how we might do contract work for them. The templates can also be adapted to accommodate digital fine art books and similar publications.

Evellum is committed to making fine digital facsimiles of ancient and medieval manuscripts. Digital products completed to date include,

  • MS Junius 11, Oxford Digital Texts 1
  • The Exeter Anthology of Old English Poetry
  • Ductus: online Medieval Latin Paleography
  • The Life of St Wilfrid by Edmer of Canterbury

In addition to these, a new Digital Facsimile of Terence's Comedies, Oxford, Bodleian Library MS Auct. F. 2. 13, is currently in preparation; it will be released in late 2006 as Bodleian Digital Texts 2.

If you need to produce a digital facsimile of a manuscript, we offer a full range of services, which include:

  • Guidelines for marking up a manuscript in preparation for digitization (a down-loadable electronic document). This document shows you how to insert links as you type and how to format your bibliography as a list.
  • On-line advice and support.
  • The processing and mapping of your manuscript images
  • The production of the digital facsimile, linking your marked-up content to the digital images.
  • The insertion of your art-work and advice on design.

Every manuscript is different and presents a unique set of issues. Evellum will assess your project and advise you on the cost of production. It is assumed that you will have acquired a set of digital images of the manuscript before undertaking the project. Scans can be made from very good 8x10 colour photographs or 4x5 transparencies. The scanning of such images may be included as part of the project for those unfamiliar with the process.

Evellum will present the author with a master copy of the finished product. Alternatively, we can arrange for the production of the finished digital product.

It is the authors responsibility to negotiate copyright issues with the institution providing the images. A Letter of Permission to Reproduce must be submitted with your proposal.
